Polishing is divided into two stages. The purpose of rough polishing is to remove the polished damage layer, and the polishing rate should be set in this stage. The surface damage caused by rough polishing is a secondary consideration, but it should be as small as possible. The second is fine polishing (or final polishing), its purpose is to remove the surface damage caused by rough polishing, so that the polishing damage is reduced to the minimum. When polishing by polishing machine, the grinding surface of the sample and the polishing disc should be parallel and evenly pressed on the polishing disc, and attention should be paid to prevent the sample from flying out and causing new wear marks due to too much pressure. At the same time, the sample should also be rotated and moved back and forth along the radius of the rotary table to avoid local wear of the polishing fabric too fast. In the polishing process, micro powder suspension should be constantly added to keep certain humidity of the polishing fabric. Too much humidity will weaken the effect of polishing wear marks, making the hard phase in the sample appear to float convex and the non-metallic inclusions in steel and graphite phase in cast iron produce "trailing" phenomenon. When the humidity is too small, due to the friction heat will make the sample temperature rise, the lubrication effect is reduced, the grinding surface loses luster, even black spots, light alloy will hurt the surface. In order to achieve the purpose of rough throwing, rotary speed is required to be low, preferably not more than 600r/min; The polishing time should be longer than the time required to remove the scratches because the deformation layer will also be removed. After rough polishing, the grinding surface is smooth, but dull and dark. Under the microscope, there are uniform and meticulous wear marks, which need to be eliminated by fine polishing.
The speed of the turntable can be increased and the polishing time should be better to remove the damaged layer of coarse polishing. After finishing polishing, the grinding surface is as bright as a mirror. No scratches can be seen in the microscope's bright field, but they can still be seen in the phase contrast lighting condition. The polishing quality of polishing machine seriously affects the structure of the sample, which has gradually attracted the attention of experts. A lot of research work has been done on the performance of polishing machine at home and abroad, and many new models and new generation of polishing equipment have been developed into a variety of semi-automatic and automatic polishing machine by the original manual operation.
